Keeping Fit

Our everyday lives have changed much in the last hundred years.  With the widespread availability of the automobile and the increased availability of public transport, we have been allowed to travel with much less effort than previously thought possible.  Added to this is the extensive use of computers in our day jobs: much work today consists of inaction over a long period of time.  Most of us will sit ordering spreadsheets instead of ploughing fields.

Because of this large cultural shift, our lives have become increasingly unhealthy.  Our societies have not yet caught up with the difference in dynamic and many of us still fail to compensate for our long spells of inaction.  It will not be uncommon for many people to hardly move at all.

There are a great many benefits to be had from adding a little bit of exercise into your life.  You will feel more positive about yourself mentally, and will begin to notice the differences externally also.

Perhaps the most pressing motivation one could have for beginning to exercise is the desire to lose weight.  Inactivity can lead to large gains in body size, which can leave sufferers with a low body image and poor self esteem.  The problems are not just mental, however, and obesity can become a dangerous medical issue if not properly addressed.

Whether or not you suffer from obesity, a lack of exercise can still have long term health problems.  By not taking proper care of your body you will noticeably increase your risk of having coronary disease.  This can lead to a heart attack and death.  Physical inaction is something to guard against at all costs as it’s results can be fatal.

Exercise can also have a positive effect on less tangible diseases, and is a fantastic way of controlling stress and depression.  The endorphins released by the body are a natural way of feeling high and good about yourself.  A run round the park will sweep away the cobwebs and leave you feeling like a new person.

There are many benefits from keeping fit; some cosmetic, some mental, some physical, and some essential.  If you introduce a healthy regime of fitness into your life you are likely to see the advantages soon after.  Why not make a new resolution today and begin looking after your body.  Who knows, you might even find a way to have fun doing it!
