Generally, a degree in dentistry requires four academic years of study. The first two years of dental school typically cover the basic sciences and the last two years the diagnosis of oral disease, surgery and clinical study. At the completion of the curriculum, you are awarded either a DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) or a DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine).

Prior to dental school, you will want to do well academically and participate in activities that demonstrate to a dental program your interest in and understanding of a dental career. You can do this by either volunteering in a dental office (general dentist, specialized or both) or perhaps in a public health clinic.

The better the grades the better chance you have of getting into Dental School.

Dentistry: If I have trouble in tooth carving, would I be able to cope with the rest of the course?

Question by phreedome: Dentistry: If I have trouble in tooth carving, would I be able to cope with the rest of the course?
I’ve just recently started my degree and we’ve only done incisors, canines and the first premolar. I’m having trouble with all of them. My carved teeth look a bit weird. How do I improve my skill? And will it be hard for me to continue this course? I know there will be more things that involve hand skills in the future and now I’m afraid I won’t be able to cope.

Anything worth doing often means a little extra effort. Practice makes perfect as the saying goes. Don’t give up on a dream if you have worked hard to get where you are. Sometimes things click into place when you least expect it. What you need is a little faith in yourself and your own abilities. You applied and was accepted into the course, take that as a given that you have the ability to follow through on what you have chosen to do. Good luck.

Whats the difference between pre dentistry major and pre dental hiygene major?

Question by musicinmypants32: Whats the difference between pre dentistry major and pre dental hiygene major?

Best answer:

Answer by BolĂgrafo
Pre-dental really isn’t a major, you have to choose biology, chemistry, or biochemistry as a major if you plan on attending dental school.

As for dental hygiene, you usually start off working with patients in a clinic at your school. You learn to clean teeth, take X-rays, assist the dentist, paper work, instruments. You’re basically an assistant.
