What song should I sig for my musical theatre intensive?

Question by Alana: What song should I sig for my musical theatre intensive?
I am a belter and need a fun song to sing for my musical theatre camp this summer. I have previously sang Out Tonight and Maureen’s part in Take me or Leave me from Rent, and also Gimme Gimme and Not for the Life of Me from Thoroughly Modern Millie. I hope that gives you somewhat of an idea of range and style. It absolutely has to be from a musical, and it has to be a female belt song but no further requirements. Any suggestions would be fabulous!! Thanks a bunch!

‘Astonishing’ from Little Women is one of my favourites. Also, as you like Sutton Foster (well, you seem to) it’d be appropriate, although it’s definitely a ballad. it shows belt/mix to Eb5 :O fab song, i love singing it to annoy the neighbours :D
Maybe “Over the Moon” from Rent would work? It’d be a challenge, but it’s such a fun song :)
A song I’ve recently discovered is ‘Alto’s lament’, which isn’t from a show, but is a spoof of lots of shows… it’s very funny ^_^
A fun ballad is also ‘diva’s lament’ from spamalot. If it’s a youth camp you’re going to, tone down some of the cursing, but it’s still fab :)
If you fancy something a bit more adult-themed and from the 70′s, ‘Dance:10, Looks:3′ is such a fun song, but not good if it’s a youth camp. lmao

If I can think of any more fun songs, i’ll let you know

have fun ^_^

I wrote a lengthy paper on Restoration comedy and drama in England, and found that time period and cultural context to be very interesting. It is the period of time in England that women were first allowed to act onstage, rather than boy-actors. The drawback to studying this time period, however, is that the plays are long and tend to be complicated.

I also think that Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed is really fascinating. Its theories allow the audience to give instant reaction and feedback on what is being performed. It focuses on empowering the audience to be active participants in the plays they see.

Good Luck!

Here are some I love:

*Nobody Does It Like Me from SEESAW
*Wherever He Ain’t from MACK AND MABEL
*I’m a Stranger Here Myself from ONE TOUCH OF VENUS
*Special or There’s a Fine, Fine Line from AVENUE Q
*Bride’s Lament from THE DROWSY CHAPERONE

The first three are old and obscure, but trust me, they’re great.

If a theatre hires AEA actors does that mean that it is an AEA Theatre?

Question by izzygoff: If a theatre hires AEA actors does that mean that it is an AEA Theatre?
In other words, as an EMC actor will I get equity points from the theatre if hired?
I’m going to SETC and trying to sort out over 50 theatres and companies so “contact the theatre” isn’t the best solution.
So if a theatre CAN issue equity points, what kind of contract are they operating under?

Best answer:

Answer by Lily ϟ Evans™
Not necessarily. A theater will tell you if it counts towards AEA, which IS different than hiring AEA actors. I’ve been in shows with AEA actors that didn’t count towards my card.

What does a woman wear to a afternoon theatre matinee?

Question by mebrowneyes84: What does a woman wear to a afternoon theatre matinee?
I am going to see “Mama Mia” on a Sunday after @ 2pm. I know that I should not have to totally dress up because it’s a matinee, but I still want to look nice. This is the first time I have been to the theatre.

I would wear dark pants with a pretty top and some nice shoes. You could wear a skirt but it will probably be pretty cold so I think pants would be best. Either way keep the pants/skirt dark. You can wear dark denim in a pinch. Enjoy the show.

Can anyone tell me the difference between “community” and “Civic” theatre?

Question by bonnie L: Can anyone tell me the difference between “community” and “Civic” theatre?
I am in a community theatre group, and we are seeking funds and grants for a new facility. I know of a “civic” theatre in our area that gets a great many grants. We are a “community” theatre, and there seems to be a difference, but I don’t know what it is. Can anyone tell me?

Best answer:

Answer by Uncle John
I would have said there is no difference.

It may be that the civic theatre has some official recognition by or connection local government. It would be worth investigating that.

In terms of grants, you will need to be formally incorporated, with a working board of directors. In these days, most granting agencies won’t deal with informal groups.

Do you know the website for the Thailand National theatre. Alternatively, how can I now the traditional shows that they are running and the times of the events? Many thanks for your help!

Best answer:

Answer by Khun Bob
I can’t find any website unless it’s in Thai. But here so information on the theatre. The National Theatre stages Thai and international performances on an irregular basis but is best known for its monthly Thai music and dance shows. They are held on the last Friday and Saturday of the month and feature Thai classical drama and khon—masked dance that tells stories from the Ramakien, the Thai version of the Indian Ramayana. The National Theatre is under the administration of the Department of Fine Arts. Na Phra That Road (next to the National Museum and near Thammasat University), Bangkok. Phone 022241342. Admission Fee is 40 Baht.

What California colleges provide a minor degree in theatre?

Question by Matty: What California colleges provide a minor degree in theatre?
I’m tranferring from a California community college within the next two years and want to get started on my major choices.

I’m pretty sure I want to major in communications, but I also love acting. I just wanted to know what colleges in California (UCs, CSUs, Private Colleges) provide a minor degree in theatre?

Any comments/information appreciated!

Best answer:

Answer by Chris
There are several colleges in California that offer these two degrees. I would look at http://californiacollegesearch.com. From there you can look by degree as well as zip code, city, type of college, and/or by name. Once you’ve decided you can request free information and decide what you would like to do.
